MEIC WATTS
Meic has a workshop in Penrhyndeudraeth in North Wales. He was fortunate in being apprenticed to the sculptor Jonah Jones after leaving art college, from whom he learnt letter cutting and carving in the local slates of North Wales and other stones. Many of the stones he now uses are glacial having been shaped and left by glaciers in the last Ice Age. Sometimes these may have only travelled short distances from local mountains but others will have been carried from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Cumbria. The natural weathered shape of the stones suggests how they can be worked. Fine grained stones can be highly polished, while others might have unusual patterns.
Meic has been working with geologists to identify the different types of stones and where they may have originated from. He has used the local Old Red Sandstone from Pandy Quarry in the Black Mountains for work at Erwood. Meic has worked on many Public Art commissions and residencies over the years.
