MAGGIE HOBBS

My work draws inspiration and references from the British countryside, in particular those areas where I spends most of my time; Worcestershire, Cornwall and East Anglia. Many of my pieces are informed by my deep fascination for natural form and texture, especially within beach-found objects, plants and seed pods, rock and pebble forms, and the ever mutable canvas of the British weather. I also have a longstanding love of British naive or Folk Art.

In my recent felted work I have drawn upon these elements, particularly Staffordshire flat-back, Pratt Ware, and English vernacular pottery figures, to weave a synthesis of traditional heart and contemporary soul. My figures, crafted on a modest scale, interpret painted earthenware through the seemingly incongruous medium of needle-felt.

“I enjoy the notion of re-working an iconic theme of “folk or vernacular” art in a contemporary medium, whilst acknowledging the early needlework tradition of stumpwork. The potential tensions between the spirit of fragile clay and forgiving wool invest the figures with a curious dialogue across the ages, ultimately resolved in an inner calm, a peaceful contemplation.”

These evocative pieces, redolent of British folk tale and early social aspiration, deliver an aesthetic impact out of all proportion to their size.
