Jackie Henshall (BA Fine Art, Central College of Art and Design, London) exhibited initially as a painter in East Anglia, spending many days under her fisherman’s umbrella painting the salt marshes of Suffolk and Norfolk. After moving to Wales (1999) she established SMALL BEAUTIES a successful design business working out from a renovated woollen mill in Carmarthenshire. There she produced a unique range of giclee prints, greeting cards and papercraft which were distributed through the Uk, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. She has has one man shows at Aberglasney, The National Botanic Gardens of Wales and Waunifor and her designs have been featured in several books.
In 2010 she set up a glass studio in the mill and since then has focused on exploring this new media, enjoying its different possibilities, insides and outsides, reflected light and transmissive light, and all the wonders of transparencies, opacities and irridescence in 3 dimensions. Recently she has been taking pieces of her glass outdoors, to let them move with the landscape and changing light and shade, and has created a youtube channel (jackiehenshallglass) full of short video improvisations and contemplations. Some of these have been included on her website as contemplations.
“I feel art can offer nourishment to the inner lives of a person, the spirit, the soul, the mind, the heart ... and this nourishment includes both the artist and the person appreciating it. When I create a glass bowl, I imagine holding it up to look at the world through the luminance of colour, or watching it transform as the light changes through the day, or slowly spinning it to see the shadows dance. There can be a coming together, the light, the glass and the person living with it, a warming companionship. I try to create glass that can be nourishing in this way.”
