Laura Boswell is a landscape printmaker working exclusively with linocut and traditional Japanese woodblock. She studied visual art and art history at Aberystwyth University in 2005 and has recently been elected to the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers. She was selected by the Nagasawa Art Project as British artist in 2009 to learn woodblock in Japan under master carvers and printers. She returned to Japan in 2013 for a collaborative residency working with contemporary Japanese printmakers.
Her work often references a traditional Japanese aesthetic in its use of studying woodblock printmaking with white space and minimal approach. Laura shares the Japanese appreciation of rigorous training; her work often displays impulsive line and brushwork, requiring meticulous cutting and printing to give the impression of fluid spontaneity.
In 2014 she headed a delegation from Oxford Brookes University and presented a paper on her teaching methods at the International Mokuhanga (Japanese Woodblock) Conference in Tokyo.
Laura will be attending a further Japanese residency in 2019.
Today she divides her time between her own work, commissions, writing and teaching. Her prints can be found in national collections including the House of Lords and the National Library of Wales. She writes a monthly column on the business side of being an artist for Artist and Illustrators Magazine and is Head of Section for Printmaking at the Art In Action festival in Waterperry, Oxford.
In addition to her printmaking, Laura teaches, writes a column for Artists and Illustrators Magazine and works on the occasional public art project. Her prints feature in national collections including the House of Lords and the Library of Wales.
