IONA MACKENZIE LAYCOCK
Iona is a contemporary textile artist, she has a degree in textiles from Leeds University and was awarded a scholarship from the Textile Institute to further her studies, she then worked in the textile industry in Yorkshire.
Iona has created her own unique way of working, inspired by the layers of the landscape, the geology, vegetation and the every changing light. The place she returns to for inspiration is the remote family croft on the north coast of Scotland, she spends time looking, absorbing the landscape, collecting materials, writing notes and then she sketches.
Iona uses wool fibres in her work collected from the places she depicts, the fibres are layered with hand painted fabrics and worked into to create richly textured surfaces.
A few years ago Iona travelled to New Zealand in search of new inspiration, using the merino wool she created textile landscapes which were exhibited at New Zealand House in London. Her last solo Exhibition was at Guildford Cathedral, she exhibits her work throughout the UK.
