FRANK & JANET HIGGINS
Frank & Janet run the UK’s only studio dedicated to design and creation of Kaleidoscopes. They have brought nearly twenty years of experience in glasswork to bear in developing this unique craft which embraces techniques of stained glass, lampworking, glass-blowing and fusing, allied with precision optical glasswork.
In doing so, they have created a renaissance in the UK of a craft not seen since the early nineteenth century when Sir David Brewster invented the Kaleidoscope. His creations enjoyed popularity as one of a class of “Philosophical Instruments”, but persisted only as children’s toys through most of the twentieth century.
Frank & Janet aim to create high quality instruments, which will produce spectacular images, while at the same time being pleasing externally. They are designed to last a lifetime. As thier output is not large, they will remain rarities.
Their work is known to collectors in the USA, the epicentre of Contemporary Kaleidoscope interest. Additionally they appear in the US published “Kaleidoscope Collector’s Guide” and are featured in “The Kaleidoscope Book”.
They are members of the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen and also of the US-based Brewster Kaleidoscope Society. Frank runs the world’s largest online discussion group for Kaleidoscope makers and collectors; Kaleidoscope Builders’ Knowledge Base.
